The X5 ground clearance and all wheel drive traction does allow it to do light duty off roading with confidence. With proper tires, and proper use of the three modes of the computer controlled traction system (and a knowledgeable driver), the car is very capable in smooth, slippery conditions (snow, mud & sand).
